What is Twitter @Anywhere?

Twitter @Anywhere is a platform that brings the functionality of twitter on to different websites. Now most of the twitter activities are hanging around the twitter home page and the tools which access twitter through its API. @Anywhere is a service which is similar to the facebook connect which allows websites to build community around their website. @Anywhere is more simple than facebook connect you need to have more technical knowledge for setting up facebook connect in your website.

Twitter Co-founder Biz Stone writes

Imagine being able to follow a New York Times journalist directly from her byline, tweet about a video without leaving YouTube, and discover new Twitter accounts while visiting the Yahoo! home page—and that’s just the beginning. Twitter has proven to be compelling in a variety of ways. With @anywhere, web site owners and operators will be able to offer visitors more.

Checkout a sample anywhere implementation by placing mouse over my twitter handle @nikhilvishnu. You will see a hovercard!!!.

Setting up @Anywhere in your site

Here we are going to set up @Anywhere to get the hovercards which shows a popup over the twitter handles showing the follow button and profile description. @Anywhere provides the following features.

Auto-linkification of @ usernames

Hovercards

Follow buttons

Tweet Box

User login & signup

For integrating this to the website you only need to add a few lines of java script into the site source code. You can do it in three simple steps

Step1: Register your website at Twitter Anywhere

Twitter @Anywhere is working like a twitter application so that you have to register your website in the twitter developer site. Go to anywhere official site and register your website by providing the details.

Twitter Anywhere registration

Step2: Add JavaScript to the header

You need to add a line of JavaScript to the header as follows

<script src="http://platform.twitter.com/anywhere.js?id=YourAPIKey&v=1"> </script>

You can find the API Key in the application details. For including this in a webpage just copy and paste this code with the API key before the </head> tag. If you are wanted to include it in your word press site include this script in header.php file located in the theme folder.

Finding Twitter Anywhere API Key

Step3: Add JavaScript to the footer

The final step for setting up twitter anywhere is adding some javascript into the footer of the site. Footer means you can include the code right before the tag </body>. Including the following code will enable the hovercards in the page.

<script>

twttr.anywhere(function(twitter) {

twitter.hovercards();

});

</script>

You can customise this code further by specifying the areas where the twitter scan for a username. Since this code contains no such specifications twitter scan the entire page and attach a hovercard over each twitter user mentioned after the ‘@’ symbol.

This is a most simple implementation of the twitter @Anywhere platform. You can find more details about the Anywhere platform and its documentation here

Google has revamped its social networking site Orkut with a new look and bunch of new features. In this new version google concentrated orkut’s principle actions into the home page, so the browsing get faster compared to the old version. The new version is entirely built on the Google Web Toolkit(GWT). New orkut give more importace for status updates like facebook and twitter. A google bar with navigation to other google services is provided in this version, now it is looking like a usual google product. At present, users need an invite to see the new orkut interface. Luckly I got one directly from google with 5 invitations . Now let’s have a look at the new orkut.

Fewer pages, Fast browsing

All the principle actions concentrated into the home page so browsing is faster than old one.

Google bar
Google includes its navigation bar to other google services in new orkut.

New orkut google bar

Search box
Unlike old orkut you can search orkut as well as web using a single search box. Quick friend search in the old orkut is
not available in this search box.

New orkut search box

Quick colour theme selection
Colour scheme of orkut can be changed from the home page itself. Total five colour schemes are available, default is blue.

New orkut header

Status Updates
New orkut layout is giving more importance to status updates. Recent visitor area is also changed, profile pics are displayed here instead of names.

Searching Friends and communities
Finding friends is very easy in new layout. The list is dynamic. Searching is done with every keystroke

Latest activity updates
Latest activity updates are something good. You can comment on these updates from your home page, no need to go to a profile.

Commenting on activity updates

My experience
Well, Its not very easy to change over to new version all of a sudden. Bit confusing to ordinary orkut users. If you are already using facebook or twitter this interface will not make any problem. I didn’t find the new promotions option anywhere in the new layout. If you find it please let me know . Photos, status updates, videos are fine. On the whole I would say its not up to the expectation. Google have to work a lot for making it more simple and elegant.

Google officially joined Twitter on February. You can find google’s official twitter account here. Google’s first tweet was a cryptic message in binary.

Some guy’s decoded that message using a python script and they said that it means ” I’m feeling lucky “. Yeah there’s possibility for such a tweet. But that’snot the end of the game. Google’s second cryptic tweet appeard on its account on 4th sepetember. It was like this

1.12.12 25.15.21.18 15 1.18.5 2.5.12.15.14.7 20.15 21.19 http://twitpic.com/giyxf

The picture that’s attached to this tweet is google’s logo with a UFO (Unidentified flying object). google’s second ‘o’ hilighted.

Ok now comeback let’s decode the tweet. We can apply the simple pattern, A=1, B=2, C=3 etc..Then the decrypted message is “All your o are belong to us”. Huh! What does this means?. This is in reference to the meme from the early 2000s “All your base are belong to us,” a humorous saying that was popularized from a poor translation of a Japanese video game.

No one find the solution for this “Unexplained phenomenon” yet. There may be a hidden message in this puzzle or they are just kidding.Whatever its a hot topic now.
